The club that offers best sound quality but..

... let's get into the but thing later.

The thing is, Planet Hollywood is a place familiar to the band, having played there for several contracts and alternate Sundays already. This is the place where most people would agree - that the sound quality is of a notch higher than prolly most of other clubs in the country.

And Superfriends does make the crowd comes in and stay...

But for me if I do come down and see them there, I'll try my best to seep into the atmosphere - trust me being one of the prop inside is much better than staying out in the open, open for rough tackling by the staff there.

Apart from a few sporting personnel there, there rest are mostly rude and rough and plain annoying! So there goes the but thing...

Antara tempat yang crowdnya paling best...

They've hit Penang, KL, KK and Kuching... And once they stayed long in JB, playing in a club called (then) Juta. They were in Juta during the down (when the club is located on the lower ground of the building) and up (when the club was renovated and elevated to the floor above) days...

I think I was using some cameraphone when I caught this - Samsung Free i kot..

This photo lak tangkap pakai Canon PowerShot something

The JB crowd is awesome - here's where you can find lots of good dancers among the male clubbers (yep, not too many good dancers among the female clubbers). Crowd kat JB ni kalau dengar je lagu Aladdin (Spider) or Give It Away (RHCP) musti joget...

Again, using the Canon PowerShot... good to catch a few bums...

Between sets boleh chill out kat meja pool... But this facility only became available bila Juta was moved to the first floor, and the place below was converted into another joint for latin and dangdut music lovers...

Something else they did... not too long ago..

... was participating in ASTRO Blast Off! I think it was sometime early this year that they did, not too long after RJ ended.

The band took a day off and set to Penang for auditions...

Can you believe this^is the only photo I captured during the auditions? Actually I was at the back with Yazi and we were kinda sibuk tengok the band play and marvelling at the number of entertained people in the crowd, yep there were lots!

The band that came on before them was sooo bad (nak set up je dekat half-an-hour)that the crowd (others auditioning and yang sama sibuk2 join like me) naik boring. Then it was Superfriends' turn, they took about 10 minutes to set up, and played Milkshake (if I remember correctly). No surprise for the kind of applause they got, of course, and the organiser immediately hinted that they'll meet again in KL.

And they did...

Photo above^ belongs to ABO. First leg, Orange, 8somethingPM..

... got favourable comments from the jury...

From left: Nazir, Siti, Nadya, Najuib lookin at sumthin else, Zam and Li listening to the comments from the jury which included Andi FlopPoppy and Jakeman of HitzFM.

By the way the photo above^ is one of the best taken using Siti's reliable ol' Lumix. But this one was recorded by Shahrul, the ones I took didn't look so good (height limitations).

They did not know there was an SMS voting thingy involved, and suddenly they found out they made it to the next round. And so the next round goes...

Photo above belongs to ABO. Apa ini macem punya performance takde rupa cam arena-concert ke?

... and again, some cool comments from (IMHO) not so suitable band of judges (I mean, are they real musicians/performers/etc in the first place? I wonder how they select them judges, but hey, if Akademi Fantasia can have Kudsia on... then the guy in the background on the photo below is... nuff said!).

Photo above ^ belongs to ABO. Check out the pants they're wearing (sans Li), semua beli kat Langkawi tu, they had a New Year's Eve function at one of the hotels there. Time tu baru lepas Tsunami Dec 26 tu, suspen je nak gi area open sea... but the show must go on...

But anyway, the band seemed to have gained more experience from ABO, met other cool dudes and dudettes, and went on to "Live life free through music!"

Live life free through music gitu...

With other contestants during the first leg of ABO.

Prior to this... RJ

A few months ago Superfriends was involved in RTM's Rentak Juara (RJ) - methinks they really did enjoyed the experience - from what I saw the fun part was getting all dressed up for TV - they were all dolled up and got an excuse to shop for more clothes...

And here's a shot Siti the keyboardist recorded during one of the rehearsals...

I can recognise the side of Nadya, and the back of Zam, and Siti's keyboard (which had berjasa to another competing band in RJ - was the competitor's keyboardist was too wussy to whip up his own instrument? Maybe!) but the rest on the stage and near the car I dunno lah sapa...

When the group did not make it the the finals during the first week, they got another shot via the SMS week (their SMS votes were highest for the week). So altogether they performed twice for RJ, and in the process made some pocket money, bumped into lots of friends in the music scene... it was like a big reunion for the players in the club scene!

I went for the first round and went home with a couple of Media Hiburan (official publication for RJ). Too bad Naza takdek any lucky draws for viewers... Kalo menang skuter ka sebijik best jugek...

By the way RJ organizers gave a limit of seven minutes per performance per band. Superfriends did an exact seven-minute duo medley of September and Khayalan for the first week. This piece is still being played by the band, usually during the first set of their show.

Current status - May 05

OK, so it's raining outside so I can't get home. So I might as well drop a note on what's the band been up to.

Currently Superfriends is playing at Uncle Chilli's, PJ Hilton all days except Sunday, 9.45PM onwards. Yep, this place has quite an eclectic mix of patrons, the thirty-somethings on most days, but yuppies and youths come quite often too, especially on Saturdays - so I've been told.

If you happen to come on a thirtysomething day, expect songs like Camelia (Ebiet's) and the rest from its era to be played. And you bet this is one of the place where the band will carry a lot of Malay tunes - even the Sudirman song is on their repertoir ok...

Uncle Chilli's ni OK jugak tempatnya - so far nothing notorious terjadi (nothing like what you get say at Juta in JB or Tribes in Kuching where fights break out every now and then) but then again I haven't been a regular so maybe I did miss a few things.

But as far as sound quality, kat sini it seems susah sikit nak setting, they say it is the fault of the club's layout that's affecting the acoustics. But don't take my word for it, datang dan dengar...

Current line-up is six-piece:
Vocals: Najuib, Nadya
Guitar: Zam
Keyboard: Siti
Bass: Nazir
Drums: Li

There'll be two new guys jamming with the band - they usually get invited on stage on the last set. Prolly will be elevated as regular line-up soon.

p/s: That small photo was taken using Alcatel OT 557 - it was the band's second performance in Astro Blast Off! I was in Ipoh, watching it with the rest of the family, so I only got a snapshot of the TV screen! Will post better photos of that soon.

Commencement: ze Band Superfriends Blog!

I've been meaning to start a blog on Superfriends for quite some time already. But biasalah, tadek photo la, tadek time la, tadek profile la... And there's so much to tell I don't know where to start!

But now, today, finally, in the midst of my so-called busy schedule, I've done it! So lo! Behold, (~drum roll~) ze Band Superfriends blog!

Sebab-sebab gue nak start blog ni:
1] I've got lots of music/live band fans who bugs me from time to time asking where the band is playing now. So everytime they change venue, I'll be posting the where, what time, and other 411 on it.

2] I've been collecting photos of the band for a long, long time, eversince I got that Nokia 7650 for free from Nokia, and there's no place like the web to post em on. (Yes this particular entry is solely for highlighting the fact that tech reporters like me do get some cool gadgets to play and keep from time to time.)

Photo ni bukan gue yang tangkap, it's a nice one to kick-start this blog, no? This photo was captured using Siti the keyboardist punya digital camera (Panasonic Lumix DMC-F1), and the effects were done by Zam, the guitarist. Yep, Korg and Ibanez aren't the only stuff these people can play with!

3] Some of my friends teringiiiin nak request lagu tapi malu nak cakap kat the band. So here you can drop comments and suggest whatever songs you want them to play. (Disclaimer: Hey I'm just a groupie meself so if they don't play the song you want the next time you all pi tengok diorang, jangan marah aaa...)

As for the band, they've been through a whole lot! Tukar repertoire (but of course!), tukar line-up (kadang-kadang je lah), and of course, tukar venue (every several months or so)... Tu belum kira berapa battle of the bands diorang masuk tu...

So this blogger aspires to document their evolution musically and otherwise-ly, and the band welcomes any tots and tete-a-tetes from all.
